How to Volunteer

The process is simple. If you are interested in volunteering...

  1. Call us at (630) 844-9090 or contact us.
  2. You will be invited to a two-hour volunteer orientation and training in order to learn about the Big Brothers Big Sisters experience. An enrollment packet, which includes references and a request for background checks, is mailed to the prospective volunteer.
  3. After step 2 is completed, you will meet with a casemanager to tell us your interests, preferences, and experiences. Matches between a volunteer and a child are made based on the needs of the child and the preferences of the volunteer.
  4. Once a match is made, our professional case managers are available to provide you with support and training.
  5. You will be asked to visit your Little Brother or Little Sister on a consistent, regular basis either for a year, or in the case of school-based mentoring, a school year.

How to Enroll a Child

  1. Parents tell us they are interested in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program for their child(ren).
  2. The parent is invited to a Parent Workshop to learn about the enrollment process and what they can expect from a Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer. Their son or daughter is welcome to attend a Kids Workshop, which is simultaneously held at our office.
  3. A confidential, private interview will be scheduled with the parent, which assists us assessing their child's strengths and determining eligibility. A visit to the home to interview their son or daughter is later scheduled.
  4. Children are invited to group activities once they are enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters.
  5. When a volunteer is selected, our case manager introduces the parent to the volunteer. The child meets the volunteer after all agree to continue with the proposed match. A case manager's support continues until the parent or child, or volunteer, no longer wishes or needs Big Brothers Big Sisters' support.
